Illegal racers slam into highway fence in escape attempt

BAGAN SERAI: In their bid to escape, more than 30 illegal motorcycle racers forced open the fence of the North-South Expressway (NSE) by crashing their machines into the structure early today.

However, their attempt was foiled when police swooped down and arrested them during a four-hour operation that began from midnight.

Police Expressway Patrol Unit Northern Zone 3 commander, Inspector Ribuan Husain said more than 100 illegal racers tried to escape when police raided their favourite stretch between Km175 and Km180 of the NSE near the Alor Pongsu lay by.

However, 70 policemen who joined the operation managed to nab all of them, including those who tried to hide in the jungle near the highway.

“We have checked 124 motorcycles and confiscated 36 of them.

“We also issued 87 summonses to the riders, all in their early 20s, for various offences,” he said here today.

He said police had been monitoring their activities in the past two weeks before they held the operation.
