M-cyclist rams cop in attempt to escape road block

KEMAMAN: A police sergeant was injured when he was rammed by a motorcyclist trying to escape a roadblock in Chukai yesterday.

Also injured was the motorcyclist, who was arrested by other members of the police team present at the roadblock in Jalan Limbong Chukai.

District police chief Superintendent Hanyan Ramlan said the incident took place about 6.20pm when the sergeant and five other policemen were manning the roadblock.

He said a man riding a Yamaha LC came along and was ordered to stop for inspection.

"Instead, the motorcyclist accelerated and tried to escape. The sergeant attempted to stop the motorcyclist but ended up being rammed instead," he said.

Hanyan said the policeman was injured in the hand, adding that the 26-year-old motorcyclist was also injured when he fell from his machine.

Both, he said, were taken to Kemaman Hospital to be treated.

"Checks revealed that the road tax on the motorcycle had expired and that the owner had also made some illegal modifications to it," he said.

Hanyan said the motorcyclist, after being treated, was taken to the district police headquarters while his motorcycle was seized.

He said investigations were being conducted under Section 42(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
