Police seize 215kg drugs worth US$150m

MELBOURNE: About 14 foreigners are facing charges in Australia, after police undertook one of the largest drug seizures in Western Australia’s (WA) history on Friday, China’s Xinhua news agency reported.

More than 215 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine, known as “ice” was uncovered by WA Police, after they raided two homes in Perth on Friday morning.

The 215kg of ice is the equivalent of two million individual portions of the illegal substance, and is said to be worth up to US$150 million on the street.

WA Police’s Deputy commissioner Gary Dreibergs said the 14 foreigners would be charged over “the biggest methamphetamine seizure in WA this year.”

“It is evident that this seizure is part of a well-funded, highly-organised, sophisticated overseas criminal organisation,” he said.

More than 150kg was seized from one house while the other 50kg was found at a property 10 kilometres away.

Investigations into an ice ring began after police intercepted a boat near the rural town of Geraldton. Authorities found containers that are known to house chemicals used in the making of the drug.--BERNAMA
