KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 20,294 road accidents and 273 fatalities have been recorded under Ops Selamat 9/2015 since it was launched on June 29 in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Federal Traffic Enforcement Investigation Department deputy director superintendent Ruslan Khalid said the number showed a decrease of road accident cases from last year which saw 19,059 cases and 330 fatalities.

"A total of 246,104 summonses were issued by the police so far, including for speeding (133,695), queue jumping (1,985) and for driving/riding on the emergency lane (1,146)," he said.

Ruslan was speaking at a press conference at the Federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman today.

"This is the first time in five years that we recorded a lower number of road fatality cases.

"Based on our investigation, most of the accidents occurred due to speeding, which led the driver to lose control of his or her vehicle," he said.

Meanwhile, on burglary cases, Ruslan said a total of 794 cases were reported as compared to 872 cases last year.
