Kedah police hunting down 'samurai robbers' who target housewives

ALOR STAR: Police are hunting down a group of men believed to be involved in at least five armed robbery cases in Pendang and Kota Star districts for the past one week.

Kedah police chief Commissioner Mohd Zamri Yahya said the five men were believed to have been armed with a samurai sword when committing the act, usually targeting women who are home alone.

He said that so far, three cases have been reported in Kota Star and two in Pendang.

He said initial investigations showed that the five cases occurred in the morning when the women were alone at their houses after their husband and children have left for work and school.

“The robbers who travel via motorcycles, would point the samurai sword to the victim’s neck before robbing the house of any valuables. We believe they have been active for the past one week,” he told newsmen after a working visit to the Kota Star district police headquarters here today.

Zamri said so far none of the victims have been injured during the robbery.

He said based on their investigation, the men, in their 20s, are from outside the state.

He said police have not ruled out the possibility that the group is linked to similar cases in Penang. He said Kedah police will be working together with its Penang counterparts to hunt down the men.

In an unrelated case, Zamri said Kedah police have received more than 10 police reports regarding a comment made by Langkawi MP Datuk Nawawi Ahmad in a Facebook posting that linked ‘Malaysian Official 1’ (MO1) to the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong recently.

However, he said all reports were referred to Bukit Aman for further investigation.
