20 rounded up on Sunday night for illegal gambling

SEREMBAN: Police arrested 20 people after raiding four online gambling premises in the district on Sunday night.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Muhamad Zaki Harun said the five police teams stormed the premises in Taman Sri Mawar, Mambau town, Jalan Tun Dr Ismail and Jalan Zaaba between 5pm and 11pm.

“We were tipped off by the public two days ago. After making our own observations, we took action.

“The detainees, aged between 18 and 58, included a Myanmar national and two Indonesian nationals. From the number, nine were watchmen and the remaining number were gamblers,” he said.

Zaki said police also seized RM8,885 in cash as well as 28 simulators and 31 computers valued about RM200,000.

He added that police have stepped up action against illegal gambling activities, 'Ops Dadu Khas' since July 20 after the state government announced that operators would not able to obtain any business licences if their shoplots were used as online gambling sites.

“We are urging the people to call us at 06-6014999 if they know about suspicious-looking premises.

“Police are also working closely with the municipal council, Islamic Religious Affairs Department and other relevant agencies to wipe out online gambling activities,” he said.

He said all detainees were being remanded under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953 to facilitate investigation.

“We are remanding the suspects as want to scrutinise whether they belong to any gambling syndicate,” he added.
