Malaysia's first cyber court begins operations today

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia activated its first special cyber court here today.

The court, located in the Duta Courts complex, specialises in hearing cyber criminal cases.

This includes bank fraud, hacking, falsifying documents, defamation, spying, online gambling and cases related to pornography.

Minister in Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said who visited the court, said that it began operations today.

“Such courts are necessary to address the increasing number of criminal and civil cyber offenses," she said after visiting the court today.

Azalina said the judges, prosecution and the defence are technologically-savvy to function as an e-court and to handle such cases.

She said the defence should also have the know-how to be able to be fair to their clients.

Azalina added that the authorities have sent 27 judges for training in the field of cyber and computer forensics.

The minister said the court is currently restricted to hearing cases related to cyber crime but it would soon expand to cover civil cases.
