MALACCA: A teenager was charged with infanticide at the Sessions Court here today for murdering her newborn in order to conceal her birth.
Nuruljannah Azalan, 18, claimed trial to a charge of smothering her newborn daughter to death by covering the infant's mouth with her hands and wrapping her with a blanket.
She was accused of committing the offence at her house in Solok Balik Bukit Palah about 6am on Sept 20, 2016.
The offence, under Section 309B of the Penal Code, carries a maximum 20 years' jail and a fine.
Earlier Deputy public prosecutor Iffa Sirhu Samsudin requested the court to deny bail, but counsel Andrew Lourdes appealed for bail on the grounds that the accused was still a teen.
Judge Norma Ismail then set bail at RM15,000 with one surety and set Oct 27 for mention.
