Body of woman found in Mengalum waters undergoes post-mortem, results out soon

KOTA KINABALU: The remains of a woman found entangled in a fisherman’s net in Pulau Mengalum waters this morning has undergone a post-mortem at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital here.

Suspected to be one of the six missing catamaran boat tragedy victims, the decomposed body was clad in a red shirt and black trousers.

Kota Kinabalu Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) First Admiral Adam Aziz, district police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Chandra and China Consul-General in Kota Kinabalu Chen Peijie were present to receive the body when it arrived at the marine police jetty here at 2.15pm.

Adam said post-mortem results are expected by tomorrow at the latest.

Twenty Chinese tourists are currently being treated at the same hospital after they were rescued from waters off here last week.

Three tourists were found dead, and five tourists – two men, two women and a 10-year-old girl – as well as a crew member, are still missing.

Meanwhile, the focus of search operations for the missing is shifting to a new area, consisting of 200 square nautical miles, where the woman’s body was found today.

Adam said the MMEA will decide tonight on the new search sector for tomorrow.

The new addition brings the total search area size to 2,100 sq nm, and covers Sabah, Miri (Sarawak) and Brunei waters.

He also confirmed that two life jackets retrieved during search operations yesterday are not from the tour company involved in the boat tragedy.
