MACC nabs Customs officer impersonator who pocketed RM2,500 bribe

JOHOR BAHRU: The Kluang branch of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) detained a man yesterday for taking a bribe of RM2,500 while masquerading as a Customs officer.

A source said the 52-year-old man was detained after receiving the bribe from a man at a fast food restaurant in Yong Peng, near Batu Pahat, at about 2.30pm.

It is understood that the man had introduced himself as a Customs officer and demanded that the victim, a trader, pay RM2,500 so that he would not take action against him for selling contraband cigarettes and liquor at his shop in Paloh, Kluang.

The man, a former Royal Malaysian Customs driver, was sacked by the department last year.

Meanwhile, Johor MACC director Datuk Azmi Alias, when contacted, confirmed the arrest.

He said the MACC will seek a remand order on the suspect at the Kluang magistrate's court today to facilitate investigation. -- Bernama
