Death in custody: Cops to call up doctor who carried out 2nd post-mortem on Balamurugan

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are expected to summon for statement the doctor who carried out a second post-mortem on S. Balamurugan, who died in police custody at the North Klang police headquarters.

Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said further clarification was needed as police only received a brief post-mortem result from the said doctor.

“It is very vague. It says pulmonary heart disease and blunt trauma but did not explain where is the blunt trauma (on the body) and whether it is blunt trauma or a heart attack that caused the death.

“We are not clear, we will seek more details from the doctor,” he said in a press conference at Bukit Aman today.

Khalid said police have opened an investigation paper against the investigating officer for wrongful confinement of a person and for failing to adhere a court order to release Balamurugan under Section 345 of the Penal Code.

Balamurugan, 44, was arrested on Feb 6 for alleged robbery. He was taken to the magistrate’s court on the following day but his remand was rejected after he vomitted blood during the remand proceeding.

The court ordered that Balamurugan be taken to a hospital or released but police took him to the police headquarters where he later died.

A second post-mortem on Balamurugan’s body was conducted by Kuala Lumpur Hospital after it was granted by the Shah Alam High Court on Feb 15.
