(Actionline) Rubbish heaps near road attract animals

Motorists travelling along Jalan Pokok Assam in George Town fear for their safety as rubbish dumped along the stretch has attracted goats.

Civil servant Hanafi Rahman, 34, said the presence of the goats made it difficult for motorists to ply the road.

“Rubbish is strewn all over the road and goats eat the discarded food.

“It makes it difficult for motorists to navigate the road as some of the adult goats become aggressive when we try to chase them away,” he told the New Straits Times yesterday.

Housewife L. Santhi, 45, said it was difficult to walk along the stretch to get to the nearby bus stop.

“The place stinks, and goats and dogs rummage the rubbish.

“I am worried that the stray animals will turn violent.”

ACTIONLINE:

Penang Island City Council Urban Services director Mubarak Junus said domestic waste is collected from households at night.

“This is an illegal dumpsite.

“We collect household waste at night while bulk and green waste is collected during the day,” he said, adding that waste collection workers collected the rubbish.

“A 1,100-litre communal centre bin has been placed in the area even though domestic waste is collected from each house.

“We will tighten enforcement to prevent such illegal dumping sites.”
