Wait for police to complete probe on Aishah's re-arrest, says Nur Jazlan

JOHOR BARU: All parties should allow police to complete their investigations into the re-arrest of Siti Noor Aishah Atam, under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma), Home Ministry said today.

Its Deputy Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said investigation is still ongoing into the 29-year-old university student's case, reported to be for possessing terrorism-related books.

"In Aishah's case, the police are still investigating it. Everyone should wait until the police have completed their investigation, because what is the point of helping if she turns out to be guilty.

"If she is innocent, then the court will set her free." he said.

Nur Jazlan said the Opposition's interest in helping to free Aishah was just an attempt to gain support of the Malay community.

"The Opposition knows that they have no issues that can help them gain the support of the Malays, so they try to turn this into an issue."

On another matter, Nur Jazlan reminded the public to restrain from spreading terrorism-related messages through social media as doing so could land them into trouble with the law.

He said police were constantly monitoring the spread of terrorism-related messages in the social media and were aware of the people behind them.

"Social media is very dangerous as it has become a tool to spread these messages. People should not simply send out these messages through their social media platform upon receiving them because police can track them down.

"The difficulty faced by the police is to identify the first person who sent out these messages because the people always hide their true identities," said Nur Jazlan.

He was speaking to the media after launching the #KitaPulai mini carnival at Kampung Permatang in Kempas here.

In September last year, the High Court had acquitted and discharged Aishah, an Islamic Studies student at a public university, from a charge of possessing 12 terrorism-related books.

She was charged under Section 130 JB (1)(a) of the Penal Code.

Aishah, however, was later detained under Sosma.

Opposition MPs have recently questioned her re-arrest, saying that the 12 books upon which her arrest was based on were not banned materials.
