Police bust motorcycle theft racket in Seberang Prai run by teens

KEPALA BATAS: Two teenagers who have been actively stealing and selling motorcycle parts through the WeChat application for the past one year were finally caught by the police in a special ‘Ops Lejang’ operation on Tuesday.

Seberang Prai Utara District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Azmi Adam said that the police managed to track the 16-year-old suspect at Jalan Kulim in Bukit Mertajam while he was waiting for his customer at about 1.45am.

One hour later, police arrested his accomplice, after the first suspect led the police to him at Taman Inderawasih in Prai.

“The first suspect was skilled in stealing motorcycles using just an Allen key. They will mostly target Honda EX5 and Yamaha motorcycles.

“They will dismantle the motorcycles and sell the parts via WeChat. They have been active since May 9 last year. Interested parties will contact them and they will meet face to face before agreeing to buy these stolen items,” he said in a press conference at the district headquarters here today.

Azmi said that police managed to trace the illicit activities when one of the owners of a stolen motorcycle identified his motorcycle’s part advertised to be sold on WeChat.

The police then traced the meeting spot and made the arrest.

Police also seized four stolen motorcycles and two motorcycle skeleton with its components believed to be sold at WeChat.

They are also looking for the duo’s other accomplices, aged between 18 and 19, who are believed to be involved.

The case is being investigated under Section 379A and 411 of the Penal Code for theft and Section 29 (1) of Minor Offences Act 1955 for fraudulent possession of property.
