Contractor, wife remanded over conspiracy, abuse of power

SEREMBAN: Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today arrested the husband of an assistant officer at the Agriculture Department here, on suspicion of conspiring with his wife to win project management contracts worth RM30,000.

The arrest was made when the 31 year-old suspect came to the Commission’s office at 4.13pm to record his statements.

The suspect, a contractor, was believed to have conspired to gain unfair advantage of his wife’s position at the agriculture centre in Sendayan, to win an herbal irrigation and herbal nursery maintenance projects worth RM10,100 and RM19,900, respectively.

When contacted, MACC Negri Sembilan director Ramli Ismail confirmed the arrest and said the suspect will be brought to the court tomorrow for a remand application.

According to Ramli, the case will be investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009, and if convicted (under Section 24 of the same Act), the suspect faces 20 years jail sentence and a minimum fine of five times the graft or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

He added that the suspect’s 34 year-old wife has been remanded and is presently under MACC’s custody to assist in the investigation of abuse of power, for appointing her husband to manage the said projects.

The woman was remanded for six days beginning last Friday and ends tomorrow.
