South Korean suspect in murder of octogenarian from China nabbed in Bukit Tinggi

BENTONG: The lone suspect in the gruesome murder of a 89-year-old woman from China at an apartment in Genting Highlands on Tuesday was arrested today.

The 57-year-old South Korean man was picked up by a team of policemen about 2.45pm near flats in Bukit Tinggi, near Janda Baik, located about 18km from the apartment where Xiang Lian Jin was murdered.

The police team also recovered a Perodua MyVi which was believed to have been stolen from the victim’s family on the day of the incident, as well as Xian’s missing handphone.

District police chief Superintendent Mohamad Mansor Mohd Nor said the suspect was brought to the district police headquarters, adding that police would seek a remand order against him tomorrow.

On Tuesday, Xiang’s body was found bundled in a blanket in the bathroom of the apartment. Her hands had been tied while her 46-year-old daughter and Malaysian maid suffered bruises to the face, body and eyes after they were also targeted by the attacker during the incident.

Xiang's granddaughter, however, was left unharmed.

Police believe revenge could be behind the murder after the suspect claimed he was not happy with the victim’s son for always badmouthing him.

Xiang, who had been born in South Korea, was renting the apartment with her family.
