KUCHING: Sarawak police intensified efforts to battle illegal gambling state-wide by conducting 92 raids in August.

Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Dev Kumar said police raided 17 districts here, including rural areas such as Marudi, Belaga and Lubok Antu.

"A total of 215 people, including 12 foreigners, aged between 15 and 65, were nabbed during our operations," he said in a statement here today.

Of the total figure, 93 were involved in illegal 4D betting, which led to the seizure of various items, including mobile phones, printers, calculators, betting slips and cash amounting to RM22,444.

Seventy-nine others were caught at suspected cyber gambling outlets in Kuching, Miri, Sri Aman and Lubok Antu, where police seized 108 computers and tablets, as well as cash amounting to RM3,672.

"We also raided two cock-fighting pits in Miri and Sibu which resulted in the arrests of 23 suspects; while paraphernalia used for gambling, including live and dead cockerels, were seized," he added.

Another 20 suspects were detained for gambling in public places in Kuching, Sibu, Miri and Dalat.

"We are focussing on fighting operators of cyber gambling outlets, especially in Miri. We want to ensure that such activities in the town are completely wiped out," he added.
