Religious teacher arrested for assaulting student

KUALA TERENGGANU: A religious school student in Kampung Raja, Besut sustained bruises after he was kicked and caned by his two teachers for allegedly stealing money from a school mate.

In the 11pm incident on Saturday, the 12-year-old victim was attacked after he denied the accusation.

A family member who was told about the incident accompanied the boy to lodge a police report at about 10.30am in Kampung Raja the next day, leading to the arrest of one of the teachers.

Besut district police chief, Superintendant Mohd Zamri Rowi confirmed the arrest of a 26-year-old teacher at the school.

He said based on initial investigations, the victim was instructed to enter a warden’s room where he was confronted by the two teachers who both accused him of theft.

When the boy refused to admit to the theft, the teachers started attacking the boy.

“The victim had been referred to the Besut Hospital for a check-up. The injuries sustained were found to be not so serious. We are still looking for the second suspect,” Zamri said.

The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means.
