Three Gang Laptop members nabbed over robbery of computers at Penang school

KEPALA BATAS: Police crippled a gang known as "Gang Laptop" with the arrest of three youths in connection with robbery of computers and laptops at a secondary school in Sungai Dua here recently.

Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Superintendent Abd Aziz Daud said the trio, aged between 16 and 23, were detained on Sept 18 about 12.30pm during the Ops Cantas and Ops Pintu special operations in the area.

Initial investigation found that the trio had managed to break into SMK Desa Murni, Sungai Dua, three times, the last time in mid-August.

"The 23-year-old was formerly working at the school, so he knows the ins and outs of the school, and where they can find these computers and laptops.

"They sneak into the computer laboratory or the school's office and take away the items undetected, even though the security guard was stationed at the school," he told newsmen here today.

In a follow-up operation, police also detained a 50-year-old Bangladeshi man, the buyer of the stolen computer items.

Police arrested him at his house and seized 26 laptops, five screen monitors and others items, worth RM70,000.

"The Bangladeshi man will sell the stolen items for a mere RM300 to RM500," he added, noting that the four men were remanded for 14 days.

The case was being investigated under Section 414 of the Penal Code for assisting in concealment of stolen property and Section 457 of the same code for housebreaking by night in order to commit an offence, punishable with imprisonment.
