Lorry driver involved in fatal crash near Seremban R&R surrenders to police

NILAI: The lorry driver, who fled after an accident which killed an elderly couple at Km270.3 of the North-South Expressway (NSE) yesterday, surrendered to the authorities today.

Nilai district police chief Superintendent Zaldino Zaludin said, the 59-year-old man was detained at Nilai police station headquarters at 4.30pm.

"The man who is from Bukit Beruntung, Rawang, claimed to be the driver of the trailer involved in the accident and urine checks conducted on him tested negative for drugs.

"He will be remanded tomorrow to assist in the investigation under Section (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.

In the 5.30pm accident, which involved four vehicles near the Seremban R&R, Lau Lian Huat, 62, and Lim Ah Gim, 60, died on the spot due to severe head and body injuries.

Zaldino said the incident is believed to have occurred when the driver of the trailer lost control of his vehicle and hit the road divider before it swerved into the opposite lane and crashed into the couple's vehicle.

"Two other vehicles were also involved in the accident, injuring three other victims," he said.
