Labourer sentenced to two days jail and fined RM20,000 for offering bribes

TAWAU: An Indonesian man was sentenced to two days jail and fined RM20,000 for two counts of offering bribes to marine police at the Sessions Court here, today.

Judge Abu Bakar Manat handed down the punishment to Santos Samsul, 27, after he pleaded guilty to the charges under Section 17 (b) of the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 for offering/giving gratification (bribe).

The labourer, who holds an Indonesian passport, was sentenced to a day’s imprisonment and RM10,000 for each count. His sentence was to run concurrently, beginning today.

Failing to pay the fine, Santos who was not represented, would face a month imprisonment.

On Nov 22, Santos tried to offer RM100 and RM300 to policemen at the Sempora police marine base as inducement to release his friend identified as Alvin Rudy, who was arrested for having no identification documents.

The following day, a report was lodged at the Tawau MACC office and Santos was handed over to the graft busters along with the RM300 used to bribe the policemen.

The court has also ordered the RM300 in cash to be handed over to the government under Section 40 of the MACC Act 2009.

Deputy public prosecutor Rustam Sanip and prosecuting offer Awang Samsul Baharom Bungso represented the commission.
