Mosquito biker rams into car, 7 other minors held for similar activity

KLUANG: Having his bicycle modified into a 'mosquito bike' came with a cost for 13-year-old Muhammad Aiman Rohaizal when he crashed into a car near his house in Taman Sri Kluang yesterday morning.

In the 7.50am incident, the youth suffered a bruised leg after slamming into a Honda Civic driven by a 44-year old school teacher who was just about to make a turn at a junction.

The impact caused the car door window of the front passenger side to shatter and the door panel was damaged.

Kluang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Muhamad Laham said the crash happened when the boy, who was riding haphazardly on his bicycle, had failed to stop at the junction and rammed into the car.

"Upon checking police found the boy was riding a fixie bicycle, a type of bicycle that has its breaking system removed and is unsafe for riding on roadways," he said.

A 'fixie' bike is also known as mosquito bike commonly use by teenagers for mosquito bike race and showing off their skills.

"No serious injury was reported but the boy sustained bruises on his leg and was sent to the Kulai hospital where he was given outpatient treatment," said Muhamad, adding the car driver was unhurt but she was shaken by the incident.

Muhamad said later the same day, seven modified mosquito bikes were seized at Taman Delima during an operation by police on mosquito bike menace at 5.45pm.

"Seven youths who were all minors were detained and had their parents called to the station to pick them up last night. They (parents) were given stern warnings and the children were told not to continue their mosquito bike activity as it was an offence." he said.
