Court extends remand on members of fake accreditation certificate syndicate

PUTRAJAYA: A remand order against three men – who were detained to assist in a probe into the issuance of fake accreditation certificates of several private higher learning institutions – has been extended by two days.

Magistrate Khir Nizam Jemari granted the remand extension on the men – including an Indian citizen – from tomorrow until Sunday.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had initially secured a five-day remand order on April 16 against the trio, aged between 30 and 34.

They were detained on April 15 during a raid in the Klang Valley.

It was reported that the MACC detained a fourth suspect, aged 34, who has been remanded for six days starting yesterday as part of the probe into the syndicate.

According to a source, the syndicate produced fake academic certificates and academic transcripts for various clients.

They would take about one week to produce each certificate bearing the names of private and public universities.

It is learnt that clients were charged RM4,500 for a fake diploma certificate; RM12,500 for a bachelor degree; RM15,000 for a master’s degree; and RM20,000 for a doctorate degree.

The certificates covered a range of courses, from science and the arts, to engineering and medicine.
