Rapid Penang bus driver punched, spat at by would-be passenger

GEORGE TOWN: Angry at not being allowed to board a Rapid Penang bus, a man shoved his way onto the vehicle and punched and spat at the driver, Bernama reported.

In the 7.30pm incident yesterday, the bus – which was heading from Bandar Sri Pinang to Komtar – had stopped at a red light at the Lebuh Macallum junction when the man knocked on the closed front passenger door.

“The man demanded to be allowed onto the bus while it was waiting for the light to turn green, but the 43-year-old driver refused to do so, as it was not a bus stop.

“The suspect then ran to the driver’s side door and argued with the driver through his window, before returning to the passenger door and forcing it open.

“He then rushed to the bus driver and spat at and punched his face, and threatened to hurt him further,’’ Timur Laut district police chief Assistant Commissioner Che Zaimani Che Awang said in a statement today.

However, the quick-thinking driver closed and locked the passenger door to prevent the man from disembarking, and drove to the bus station at Pengkalan Weld here, before contacting the authorities.

‘’The 46-year-old suspect was detained by the Penang Rapid Bus auxiliary police and was handed to the Lebuh Pantai police station,’’ Che Zaimani added.
