Two arrested for stopping police MPV at vote tallying centre in Rantau

SEREMBAN: Police have arrested two men over yesterday’s incident during the Rantau by-election for allegedly stopping a police mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) which was escorting another car that was sending ballot papers to a vote tallying centre.

Acting Negeri Sembilan police chief Datuk Mohamad Mat Yusop said the two suspects were arrested at about noon today.

One of them, a 52-year-old car salesman, was arrested at a house in Seremban, while the second suspect, a 36-year-old lorry driver, was arrested in Rantau.

He said police were looking for three other suspects to facilitate investigation under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing public servants in discharging their public functions.

In yesterday’s incident at about 6pm, two policemen in a MPV car were escorting another car that was carrying ballot papers to a vote tallying centre at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Chung Hua when they were approached by five men who demanded to inspect the MPV, claiming that there were excess ballot papers in the MPV.

Meanwhile, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) communication director Fahmi Fadzil, in a statement today, said the party viewed seriously claims of misconduct and breach of regulations in the Rantau by-election and would bring up the matter to the party’s disciplinary board.

“If any PKR members are found involved, stern action will be taken against them,” he added. – BERNAMA
