Watch: Plucky GrabFood rider fends off two would-be robbers, recounts harrowing encounter

KUALA LUMPUR: A GrabFood delivery rider suffered minor injuries during a scuffle with two men who attempted to steal his motorcycle in Phileo Damansara here yesterday afternoon (Aug 9).

The 22-year-old victim, who only wanted to be known as Amirul, said he was delivering food when he was approached from behind by two men on another motorcycle.

"I did not realise they were following me until it was too late. By the time I realised what was happening, one of the men attacked me with a motorcycle lock.

"I was taken aback at first but I managed to pluck up the courage to fight back. During the struggle, I suffered injuries to my lips, hands, ears and back," he said when contacted today.

Amirul said he was willing to put himself in danger as he did not want the would-be robbers to steal his prized Yamaha Y15zr motorcycle, which he calls ‘Ysuku’.

Footage of the incident, which was captured by a closed-circuit television camera, has gone viral on social media. The one-minute-37-second video shows the two suspects running away after failing to snatch Amirul's motorcycle.

Following the incident, several passersby assisted Amirul and recovered a mobile phone, which was believed to be left behind by one of the suspects.

"I have lodged a police report and gave them the mobile phone, which contains a picture of a person who resembles one of the suspects," said Amirul, who has worked as a deliveryman for the past four months.

Amirul said he was traumatised by the incident, adding that he would take a break from his job and recuperate at his hometown in Tanjong Karang, Selangor.

Meanwhile, Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zani Che Din in a statement said the case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for causing hurt during an attempted robbery.
