Two policemen detained after RM2,000 extortion bid

GEORGE TOWN: Two policemen were detained recently over suspicion of trying to extort a man of RM2,000.

The policemen were believed to have spotted a man on a motorcycle, parked by the roadside at Lorong Hijau 3, Jelutong and decided to conduct a check.

The man told the cops that he was waiting for his friend. The policemen then decided to check the man’s mobile phone, where they found a receipt for an illegal lucky draw.

The man was then taken to a nearby police station. At the station, the policemen told him that he could be fined RM12,000 if he was found guilty of the offence.

However, the policemen offered him a lifeline, in the form of a RM2,000 payment to “settle” the case.

The man, who only had RM200 on him, gave up his cash. The policemen then told him to withdraw more money.

The man ended up paying RM400 to the cops before he was released.

However, he subsequently lodged a police report. The two cops, aged 25 and 28, were then detained to assist with the investigation.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Che Zaimani Che Awang confirmed the arrests and said that both of them will be remanded.

The case is being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion.
