Man who stabbed pregnant wife was depressed, says cousin

PUTRAJAYA: The audio engineer who inflicted physical injuries on his pregnant wife on Friday, is suspected to be suffering from depression due to a heavy workload in the past two to three months.

The suspect’s 37-year-old cousin, who wanted to be known as Din, said the change in his behaviour became evident following the death of his grandmother four months earlier.

“We have been close since we were children.

“After grandmother’s death, he returned to Melaka and seemed to have a lot in his mind.

“I asked him why he appeared burdened, he replied that he had a lot of work.

“I told him to come back and work in Melaka since his office has a branch there.

“He told me he had plans to do so after the wife had given birth,” he told Berita Harian yesterday.

Din said the relationship between the suspect, 39, and his wife, 35, seemed normal.

“As far as I know, they had no problems with each other, even the relationship between families from both sides was very close,” he said.

In the incident on Friday, the suspect was believed to have stabbed his heavily-pregnant wife, who is a teacher.

The woman suffered four stab wounds, including two to the stomach and gave birth to a baby boy through Caesarean section.

She had driven herself to the Putrajaya Hospital for treatment following the attack, before going into labour and giving birth on Saturday.

Putrajaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Rosly Hassan said the woman’s husband was arrested at their home and has been remanded until Nov 15 for an investigation under Section 326 of the Penal Code.
