Naked, parang-wielding man attacks cop outside Kuantan mosque

KUANTAN: A policeman, from the Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) suffered injuries to his right arm after he was attacked by a parang-wielding man outside the Sultan Ahmad 1 Mosque, here, today.

In the 11.30am incident, the officer went to area after being alerted about the presence of a naked man, armed with a parang, along Jalan Besar.

Kuantan police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Noor Yusof Ali said when the policeman arrived at the area, the suspect, believed to be of unsound mind, ran towards the mosque's compound.

“Suddenly, he stopped and started to hurt himself. When the officer tried to calm him down by moving closer, the suspect started to swing the parang, hitting the policeman's helmet and right arm.

"He tried to attack the policeman again but the officer managed to keep his distance this time.

Mohamad Noor said before the officer could make his move, the suspect ran towards the Tanjung Lumpur bridge and threw the parang into the river.

With the help of several passers-by, he said the suspect was apprehended and sent to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital for treatment.

"We are still tracing his family members to get more information about his condition. For now, he will remain in our custody." he added.
