Pulau Gaya shooting: Police surround suspect's hiding place

KOTA KINABALU: Police are surrounding the hiding area of a man who fired shots and injured three people, including two children, on Pulau Gaya here last night.

A police team is conducting a cut-off at the area identified to have been the suspect's hideout since 8pm yesterday.

The team involved the district criminal investigation division, special investigation unit of Sabah police headquarters, and marine police.

It is learnt that the armed suspect was using a village boat and was hiding under water village houses at Kampung Pondo on the island.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Habibi Majinji said police personnel are on the lookout and are controlling the exit pathway around the hiding place.

"We have identified the suspect's location and we are guarding (his) hiding place to prevent suspect from fleeing," he said when contacted.

It is also learnt that the suspect was believed to have robbed a fishing boat and an engine in Kinarut and Meruntum waters prior to the shooting.
