Drug suspects nabbed after high-speed car chase

KUANTAN: Two drug suspects were detained following a high-speed car chase along the Kuantan-Pekan stretch near Inderapura here today.

One of the suspects was later involved in a scuffle with police in his desperate attempt to flee.

The driver, a 50-year-old suspect, had 17 previous drug-related offences while the 43-year-old second suspect had previously served time for drugs and criminal offences.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Noor Yusof Ali said a police mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) was on crime prevention rounds at Batu 6, Jalan Gambang about 10.35am when they spotted a Proton Wira car being driven suspiciously.

"The MPV personnel suspected something amiss and ordered the driver to stop but the man behind the wheel sped off against traffic. The MPV team called for assistance before the suspect's car was cornered by the other patrol car near the Inderapura U-turn.

"When policemen approached to inspect the vehicle, the car driver suddenly dashed out and ran towards a nearby construction site to escape arrest. A scuffle ensued before the suspect was overpowered and detained," he said, adding the second suspect, who was seated in the front passenger seat, did not attempt to flee and surrendered to police.

Noor Yusof said police seized a packet containing substance believed to be drugs from the duo and both suspects tested positive for drugs.

He said the suspects were remanded at the district police station for investigations under Section 12(2) and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for taking drugs and being in possession of drugs.
