PJ man batters wife, then strangles cop trying to intervene

KUALA LUMPUR: A man who was "running amok" at the Sungai Way Impian Baiduri apartments in Petaling Jaya, yesterday, physically attacked a police officer who was responding to a distress call on the disturbance.

The 49-year-old man bashed the police personnel with a piece of wood, before proceeding to strangle him, Bernama reported.

Following a struggle, other members of the police team which had arrived at the scene managed to subdue the assailant.

The incident began at 5pm when police were alerted to a domestic disturbance at a block of the apartments. It is learnt that the man had struck a woman, believed to be his wife, before "running amok".

When a team from the mobile patrol vehicle branch of the PJ headquarters reached the scene, they were greeted with foul words by the man, who then attacked one of their members.

"A struggle ensued when the man acted aggressively by attacking and strangling the police personnel, who suffered light injuries," Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said in a statement, today.

He added that the suspect has been remanded for four days, and the case will be investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for intentionally causing injury by using a weapon or other dangerous object.
