KUALA TERENGGANU: A 12-year-old girl claimed she was raped by a man she befriended on a dating application.
The incident was said to have happened at about 9pm at the area of a workshop in Kemaman last Thursday.
Terengganu Crime Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Suffian Sulaiman said prior to what happened, the victim was with her mother at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital to visit a family member at about 1.30pm.
The victim however only waited at the lobby of the hospital. It is learned that she made her way to Kemaman where she met up with the suspect, whom she had recently known through the app, at a petrol station.
The suspect was said to have picked her up at the petrol station to take her sightseeing but the victim claimed he gave her something to drink while they were in the car which made her sleepy.
She said he then took her to an area where there was a workshop.
"The victim fell asleep and woke up when the suspect removed his pants and raped her," Suffian said when contacted yesterday.
He said a report was lodged on the incident at about 5am Friday.
Following the report, a 28-year-old man who works as a mechanic was arrested at about 2pm in Kemaman.
"The suspect has been remanded for further investigation under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape," he informed.
