TAIPING: A 39-year-old father was charged at the Sessions Court here today with child endangerment after his 11-year-old daughter ate homemade biscuits baked with cannabis.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read before Judge Nabisha Ibrahim.
According to the charge sheet, the man had exposed his daughter in a manner likely to cause her physical injury and health issues by letting her eat homemade biscuits laced with cannabis.
The rubber tapper was accused of committing the offence at a home in Kampung Bagan Lawin in Gerik at 7.30pm on May 29.
The offence falls under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or 20 years' imprisonment or both upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Waffy Ismail prosecuted, while the accused was not represented.
Mohd Waffy urged the court to deny bail as the accused's daughter had been discharged from the hospital and currently living with her mother, under the same roof.
The judge then denied bail and set July 6 for mention.
It was reported that the girl was admitted to the hospital after showing serious side effects from eating chocolate biscuits suspected to be laced with cannabis.
Police received a report at 10.26pm on May 29 from a medical assistant at the Lawin Health Clinic after the victim suffered shortness of breath, dizziness and nausea after eating biscuits made by her father.
The father's urine test came back positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
