MATF ops led by MACC nabs Datuk businessman, seizes RM38 million cash, 200kg gold

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested a businessman with a 'Datuk' title and seized cash worth about RM38 million and 200kg gold valued at nearly RM60 million, as well as 17 luxury cars on Monday.

Among the high end cars confiscated were Maserati, Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz. Also nabbed were the businessman's accomplices.

The man's arrest was part of a mass operation by the Multi-Agency Task Force (MATF) led by MACC which raided 34 locations in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor and foiled several illegal activities.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrest.

He said the case will be probed under the MACC Act 2009, Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, Income Tax Act 1967 and Customs Act 1967.

A MACC source said the operation codenamed Op 82S involving 315 personnel was the first mission conducted by the MATF chaired by the Attorney-General.

The operation had crippled a corruption syndicate, cases of breach of trust, smuggling of illegal goods and invalid tax reduction.

The police, Immigration Department, Customs, Bank Negara Malaysia, the Inland Revenue Board and Cyber Security Malaysia were also involved.
