38-yr-old detainee dies in Pengkalan Chepa lock-up

KUALA LUMPUR: A 38-year-old man has died in the Pengkalan Chepa police lock-up in Kelantan.

Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department director Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad said the detainee died on Wednesday (Nov 22).

He said the detainee was transferred from the Pengkalan Chepa Prison, Kelantan, and temporarily placed in the lock-up for a court case.

"The detainee had been sentenced to two years in jail from the date of his arrest, July 5, at the Pengkalan Chepa Magistrate's Court under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952," he said in a statement on Friday (Nov 24).

Azri said the detainee had complained of feeling unwell at 7.42pm on Wednesday and medical personnel were called in from the Pengkalan Chepa Health Department in Kelantan to attend to the man.

"Checks were done and the detainee was confirmed dead.

"An autopsy was performed at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital in Kelantan on Nov 23. A Covid-19 test was also done, and it returned negative."

Azri said the cause of death has yet to be determined as laboratory tests are still pending, while the case has been classified as sudden death for the time being.

"The Criminal Investigation Unit for Deaths in Custody will investigate the case thoroughly before turning over the findings to the Coroner," he added.
