Urine test on cop who hit 17-year-old student came back negative

IPOH: The urine test conducted on a police officer who was apprehended in connection with the death of a 17-year-old student came back negative for drugs.

This was confirmed by Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri when contacted today.

Mohd Yusri said that the result was obtained following a screening conducted on the 44-year-old man after he was arrested on Friday.

"A urine test has been done and confirmed to be negative. The police have also taken a blood sample and are waiting for the results from the pathologist," he said when contacted today.

Mohd Yusri also urged the public not to make any negative assumptions regarding the investigation of the case, especially on social media.

On Friday, in the 12.30pm incident, the victim, Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie was on his way home in Chemor from his school, SMK Jati in Meru.

It is understood that before the incident, there was an altercation involving the police officer who was driving a Perodua Ativa and the teenager, who was allegedly making noise with his motorcycle.

Subsequent events led to the police officer with the rank of deputy superintendent chasing the victim for almost a kilometre before crashing into the teenager from behind.

Due to the impact, the victim fell, was dragged for almost five metres and died at the scene later.

On the same day, police arrested a senior police officer who allegedly rammed into the victim with his car.

A post-mortem conducted on the student at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here found that the cause of his death was chest and abdomen injuries due to a road traffic crash.

District police chief Superintendent Yahaya Hassan said that the policeman has been remanded for three days until tomorrow to assist in the investigation.
