Policeman in Ipoh hit-and-run case arrives in court for murder charge

IPOH: A senior police officer linked to the fatal hit-and-run case of teenager Muhammad Zaharif Affendi, has arrived at the Ipoh magistrate's court to face murder charges.

The 44-year-old deputy superintendent, attached to the Kedah police contingent headquarters, arrived at the court complex around 9am via a police car.

Escorted by several policemen, the man, in handcuffs, was as clad in a white T-shirt and trousers.

Yesterday, Attorney General Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh, in a statement, said the suspect would be charged in the Magistrate's Court under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Ahmad Terrirudin said after studying the outcome of the investigation and statements contained in the investigation papers, the Attorney General's Chambers finds sufficient material for a charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

On Friday, Muhammad Zaharif was on his way home at Taman Chepor Sentosa from his school, SMK Jati in Meru, here when he became embroiled in an altercation with the suspect.

It was reported that Zaharif, who was on a motorcycle, was revving the bike throttle and making a loud noise, which displeased the suspect, who was in a nearby car.

It is understood that the suspect chased Zaharif in his car for more than a kilometre before knocking the motorcycle from behind.

Due to the impact, the victim fell and was dragged almost five metres.

The victim, who was still fully dressed in school sports uniform, died at the scene.
