Police record statements from 22 people over death of 17-year-old student

IPOH: Police have recorded statements of 22 individuals to assist in the investigations into the death of the 17-year-old student who was allegedly killed after being run over by a policeman on Jalan Taman Jati here on Friday.

Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan said of that total, 14 witnesses have come forward and 13 of them were students and the public.

Mohd Yusri said police have recorded their statements under Section 112 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).

"Police have also recorded eight other individuals related to this case, making the total number of individuals that have been recorded 22," he said when contacted today.

When asked if the 44-year-old policeman would be charged tomorrow after his remand ends, Mohd Yusri briefly told the reporter to wait.

On Friday, in the 12.30pm incident, the victim, Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie was on his way home in Chemor from his school, SMK Jati in Meru.

It is understood that before the incident, there was an altercation involving the police officer who was driving a Perodua Ativa and the teenager, who was allegedly making noise with his motorcycle.

Subsequent events led to the police officer with the rank of deputy superintendent chasing the victim for almost a kilometre before crashing into the teenager from behind.

Due to the impact, the victim fell, was dragged for almost five metres and died at the scene later.

On the same day, police arrested a senior police officer who allegedly rammed into the victim with his car.

A post-mortem conducted on the deceased at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here found that the cause of his death was chest and abdomen injuries due to a road traffic crash.
