'He's short-tempered', says wife of senior cop who ran over a teenager

KUALA LUMPUR: The wife of the senior police officer who ran over a teenager Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie at Jalan Taman Jati near Meru yesterday offered an apology and admitted that her husband is a short-tempered man.

She reportedly said this upon seeing Nur Zawanie Muhd Zamrie, 28, the sister of the victim at the scene, claiming that her husband could not stand the loud sound of motorcycles.

Zawanie said the officer did not even offer an apology to the family members.

"His wife met me at the scene, came to apologise. She did it verbally," she said when met at their home, Kosmo reported.

The sister, who is also a nurse, said Zaharif was still alive and awake at the time, but was gasping for air.

She said she saw the officer who was responsible for her brother's death, but he did not come over to offer any sort of help.

"(Either to) call for an ambulance, to apologise, to admit fault; he did nothing," she said.

In the 12.30pm incident, the victim was on his way home in Chemor from his school, SMK Jati in Meru.

It is understood that before the incident, there was an altercation involving the police officer who was driving a Perodua Ativa and the teenager, who was allegedly making noise with his motorcycle.

Subsequent events led to the 44-year-old police officer chasing the victim for almost a kilometre before crashing into the teenager from behind.

Due to the impact, the victim fell and was dragged almost five metres and died at the scene later.

Police confirmed to have arrested the senior officer.

This case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving and Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
