RM300 borrowing via `mariwang' application turns into RM10,000 nightmare, ends in red paint attack

KOTA BARU: Police have detained two unlicensed loan sharks (also known as Ah Long) believed to have splashed red paint on a house belonging to a client recently.

Kelantan police chief, Datuk Muhammad Zaki Harun, said the two were arrested in separate operations here on Thursday night.

He added that a motorcycle, several bottles of red paint, a pair of shoes, and other tools were also seized during the operation.

Zaki said the arrests were made after police received a report from the victim on Jan 15.

"In the report, the victim claimed his house was splashed with red paint at about 7.30pm on Jan 14. The red paint also hit a car belonging to his neighbour.

"He said that Ah Long also left a warning notice, urging him to settle his debt.

"The victim in the report admitted that he had borrowed RM300 from the Ah Long via the `mariwang' application in 2021 and was given only RM150.

"The victim said he had paid the Ah Long back about RM1,000 but was asked to pay RM10,000," he said.

In his latest conversation with the Ah Long, Zaki said the victim told the loan shark that he could not afford to pay the amount.

"Based on the report, police raided a house in Kampung Padang Bonggor at about 7.30pm on Thursday.

"In the operation, police detained the first suspect and seized a motorcycle, several bottles containing red paints, shoes, and other equipment.

"In the follow-up operation at a food stall in Padang Garong about 11pm on the same night, police detained the second suspect," he said.

Zaki said the two suspects, aged 25 and 26, have been remanded for four days beginning yesterday.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 5(2) of Moneylenders Act 1951.
