MACC detains man for soliciting RM150k bribe to help secure nonexistent project

KOTA KINABALU: A man was arrested for allegedly deceiving a contractor into providing about RM150,000 in bribes in exchange for securing a school repair project in Beluran.

According to sources, the suspect, aged around 60 and self-employed, solicited and accepted the bribe.

"The bribe was to assist the contractor in obtaining the said project worth around RM1.5 million, although the project does not exist.

"The incident occurred around 2019, and the suspect claimed to help the victim secure the project.

"The suspect was detained at the Sabah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office at around 10.30 am today while giving a statement."

Meanwhile, Sabah MACC director Datuk S Karunanithy, when contacted, confirmed the arrest.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009.

"The suspect will be charged in the Kota Kinabalu Corruption Court tomorrow," he said.
