Kelantan cops launch search in village for suspects linked to attack on Thai policemen

KOTA BARU: Kelantan police will carry out a massive operation in Kampung Tersang and its surrounding areas following the bomb explosion and gunfire in the Pasemas district in Sungai Golok sub-province last night.

State police chief Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun said they believed the suspects involved in the midnight incident had fled to the village.

He said police also believed the areas were the suspect's hiding ground after the explosion and shooting of four Thai policemen.

"The state police have yet to receive an official request from our Thai counterparts to assist them in the case.

"But we will beef up our checks along the border area, especially in Kampung Tersang and its surrounding areas," he told a press conference today.

On the claim that Thai police had found a car with a Malaysian registration number plate, Zaki said police would investigate the claim.

It was reported that police have tightened security along the Malaysia-Thailand border following the incident.

Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said in response to the incident that police will collaborate with the Thai authorities.

"The safety of people residing near the border area must be prioritised, including the safety of our police personnel on duty there," he said.

Razarudin said all state police chiefs, especially those from Kelantan, Perlis, Kedah and Perak, have also been instructed to be on high alert regarding the incident.

It was reported that four Thai policemen were injured in an attack at their base in Pasemus district which is located opposite Bukit Lata in Rantau Panjang.

Sungai Golok police chief, Pol Col Jadsadavit Inprapan said the incident happened about midnight (Thai time).

The victims, all with the rank of Sergeant, were warded at Sungai Golok Hospital.

The suspects were believed to have planted a bomb on the road where the policemen passed by.

After the blast, several men fired shots at the policemen. The suspects later fled the scene.
