KUCHING: A police corporal here was arrested yesterday for allegedly soliciting and accepting a RM1,000 bribe.

The 54-year-old policeman attached with the MJC Batu Kawa police station was picked up by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at a restaurant here at 5.30pm.

Details on why the policeman had demanded the bribe from the complainant have yet to be attained.

The suspect, clad in an orange lockup t-shirt, was produced at the magistrate's court in Petra Jaya near here today to be remanded.

Magistrate Zulhairil Sulaiman granted an application by MACC prosecuting officer Mohd Asri Abu Mansor for the suspect to be remanded for a week until June 1.

The case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009 for receiving any forms of graft, which carries the maximum 20 years’ jail and a RM10,000 fine, or five times the value of the bribe, whichever is higher.

He is the second policeman here nabbed by the MACC for allegedly accepting bribes this week.

On Tuesday, the graft busters arrested a traffic policeman for allegedly accepting RM4,500 in bribe money from a traffic offender.
