Orphans, underprivileged children get Hari Raya treat thanks to Fire Dept & SHOES

KUALA LUMPUR: Fifty two orphans and underprivileged children were treated to a shopping outing and buka puasa feast today, courtesy of the Safety and Health Occupational Employees (SHOES) and the City Fire and Rescue Department.

The children were each given cash and vouchers worth about RM400, and were brought to Mydin Hypermart in Subang Jaya to shop for new clothes and necessities for the upcoming Hari Raya.

The children were then taken to Hang Tuah fire station and were given a tour of the premises, its fire trucks and firefighting equipment as well as being taught on fire safety awareness.

SHOES is made up of more than 300 members of three WhatsApp groups of security and safety personnel from various bodies in the city including hotel, hospital, businesses and banking establishments.

City Fire and Rescue Department director Khirudin Drahman said this is the third year the programme “Kami Sayang Kamu” has been held.

“This Ramadan, we raised about RM18,000 from the group members.

“Instead of offering help to registered organisations, this year we spread a message through WhatsApp, saying that we are looking for underprivileged children. They were personally chosen by the committee members” he said.

The group also decided to cut down expenses on hotel buffet but instead, hired a caterer and held the buka puasa at the Hang Tuah fire station in order to let the children spend more on their Hari Raya preparations.

Among the biggest contributors for tonight’s event included Export-Import Bank of Malaysia Bhd and Malaysian Electronic Payment System Sdn Bhd.
