Twenty Melaka schools record bully, drug cases

MELAKA: Twenty primary and secondary schools in the state have been identified as “problematic” following spate of discipinary cases including bullying and drug abuse.

State police chief Datuk Abd Jalil Hassan said from the data provided by the police headquarters in Bukit Aman, bullying incidents reportedly to have taken place at 17 schools, while the remaining three schools recorded both drugs and bullying cases.

“Eleven of the problematic schools are in Melaka Tengah, five in Alor Gajah, and four in Jasin,” Abd Jalil told reporters when met at the launching of ‘Volunteer Smartphone Patrol’ (VSP) application here today.

He said police were devising a preventive mechanism, which among others, placements of a narcotics department school liaison officer at each of the three schools to monitor incidents of drug cases.

“Placements of the officers will take place soon to address this issue,” Abdul Jalil said.

On VSP, Abdul Jalil said application could be used to assist the police in crime prevention, other than requests to patrol in residential areas when the home owners are away during festive seasons.

“VSP is an app which users can alert the police on possibilities of crime taking place. As of March 25 this year, 1,829 smartphone users who have registered themselves as VSP members.

“We hope to get at least 300,000 people in Melaka to download and register this application, because it will be very handy for them.”
