Cops brave fire, thick smoke to save siblings trapped in burning Shah Alam condo

SHAH ALAM: Quick action by a team of policemen saved the lives of two siblings who were trapped inside a condominium unit on fire, here this morning.

The 10.30am incident at the Sri Mahligai Condominium in Section 9 saw policemen powering on through thick smoke to save the brother and sister.

Shah Alam district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shafien Mamat said police were alerted to the blaze and rushed to the condominium to find smoke billowing from a unit on the fourth floor

He said they saw a 29-year-old man trapped at the house balcony, which was fitted with grilled windows, before the policemen rushed upstairs to rescue him.

"Upon reaching the condo unit's front door, the police team found that it was locked and broke it open.

“Despite the thick smoke and raging fire from the unit's kitchen, the policemen rushed into the unit where they found the man at the balcony. The man’s 13-year-old sister was found inside one of the bedrooms there.

“They carried the victims to safety before firemen arrived to put out the blaze,” he said.

The girl was rushed to the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang for treatment due to smoke inhalation.

Shafien said he was proud of the selfless action of the policemen, who were corporals and constables. He said they will be presented with commendation certificates.
