Raub hit by second wave of flooding; 250 flee to evacuation centres

KUANTAN: The second wave of monsoon flooding struck Raub late yesterday, sending 250 people from 67 families to seven evacuation centres in the district.

The flooding comes just four days after floodwaters from the first wave receded, allowing residents in low-lying areas to return to their homes. The new round of flooding follows a downpour lasting several hours yesterday.

State Civil Defence Force (APM) director Zainal Yusoff said that the first relief centre was opened at Kampung Temau’s multipurpose hall at 9.30pm. This was followed by Ulu Sungai’s multipurpose hall, Sega Lama’s multipurpose hall, Kampung Pia Hall, SK Chenua, Ulu Renggol and the Kuala Semantan mosque.

"Flood victims continued to flee to relief shelters well after midnight," he added.

Meanwhile, Kuantan has been lashed by continuous heavy rain since last night, raising concerns of possible flooding.

An APM spokesman said the agency has not received any report of flooding in the district, but assured the public that it will continue to monitor the situation.
