MDKS to investigate officers caught on viral video overturning tray of fish at wet market

KUALA LUMPUR: Two Kuala Selangor District Council (MDKS) have received criticism from netizens following a viral video of the two enforcement officers making a mess at the Pasir Penambang wet market recently.

In 90-second-long video, which was being shared widely in Facebook, two of three uniformed enforcement officers from MDKS deliberately overturn two full trays of fish and seafood belonging to one of the fishmongers shortly after they were seen walking to the stall.

The video also showed that one of the officers exchanging words with the fishmonger, believe to be the owner of the fish stall, while his colleague managed to take a photo of another fishmonger cleaning the mess.

Shortly after, all three of the enforcement were seen leaving the area.

Based on the timestamp on the video, the incident took place at 10.56am on Jan 13.

In response, MDKS, in a statement today, said that an internal investigation will be conducted following the incident and that the three enforcement officers will be barred from serving in the field.

Its Development Planning Department director Mohamad Yusli bin Askandar said that the enforcement officers had a scheduled patrol at the market on the day of the incident and found that some of the belongings of the fishmonger were blocking the public walkway.

"Checks revealed that the fishmonger has received two warning letters (from MDKS) previously and that the enforcement officers who were on duty have already ordered them to immediately remove the obstacle.

"There was a little misunderstanding when the enforcement officers tried to help the fishmonger to remove the obstacle, which was the fish tray, causing it to fall onto the floor.

"MDKS regret the action by the irresponsible parties who have caused the incident to go viral," he said.

Yusli added that it is important that the fishmongers, as well as other traders, comply with the rules and regulations set by the local council to ensure that the wet markets are clean.

"MDKS have also met with the affected fishmongers who admitted their mistake. They have promised to comply with the directive issued by MDKS," he said.

He also urged the public to lodge any complaints concerning the MDKS services through its Sistem Talian Aduan Rakyat Selangor (STAR), and issues pertaining to the discipline or misconduct including bribery, through aimdks@mdks.gov.my
