Roaring business selling young coconut water on scorching hot days

KIJAL: There is no better way than to quench one’s thirst on a scorching hot day than with cool, fresh water from a young coconut.

And that’s exactly what Othman Abdul Ghani and his friends are offering to locals in several locations in Terengganu.

Othman, 63, a villager from Kampung Titian Berayun in Kijal, said that he had a steady supply of young coconuts from farms in Kemaman.

"My friends and I are able to purchase the young coconuts and sell them at several places where there is a large congregation of people, like at exhibitions, carnivals, shows, malls and gatherings," said Othman, who also made his presence felt at last month’s Expo Terengganu 2018 at Kuala Nerus.

Othman said he and his team also sold traditional Terengganu food like satar, otak-otak and lemang which went well with the young coconut water.

"As our stalls are strategically located, there is always a steady flow of patrons for the coconut water, which goes down well with its nutritious flesh.

"We are more often than not overwhelmed and have our hands full manning our stalls," said Othman, adding that the mid-day soaring temperatures brought brisk business.

He added he was glad that many Malaysians appreciated the nutritious content of local coconuts.
